Phil Tetlow

I graduated in Fine Art at Sheffield College of Art and Brighton before teaching art in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. I now exhibit widely throughout the U.K.

My common theme is light and its ever changing effects on the world we observe, landscape, buildings, people. I love the huge open skies and the sudden seasonal changes. I want to capture that instant play of light on the landscape, the contrasting tones, the dapples and reflections. I often start with a dark canvas and work tone on tone until, after building up the layers, the finished painting emerges.

Although essentially anchored in realism, each piece represents my striving to balance an image of reality with the pure enjoyment of the physical process involved, maintaining the painterly qualities and enabling my work to be appreciated on many levels.

I am of the generation of painters who were trained in a traditional way and acknowledge the influence of Paul Henry, Alfred Munnings and the Impressionists on my work.
